We haven’t had any experience of pick your own experience before, just heard how fun it was from our Malaysian friends who had been here longer than us. Pick your own (PYOs) are kinda big farm where consumer can harvest fruits and vegetables themselves. There are many PYOs farm in New Zealand which offered you many type of fruits and vegis like raspberry, apples, pears, peaches, blueberries, tomatoes, chillies and many more. But you need to alert about the season because different type of fruits and vegis have got different season. You need to check the harvest schedule to make sure you are in full swing season.
We have planned to go to Otaki many time but always cancelled. Without checking the harvest schedule we just turned up there and try our luck. The most vegis we were hunting for was chillies actually, besides seeing with our own eyes some fruit plants that we couldn’t find in Malaysia. It’s difficult to find fresh chilli especially ‘cili padi’ here and yet it’s quite expensive. Even though the info board showed that some fruit and vegis were almost finished but there were more than enough of them for us.
The farm was amazing. Besides apples, pears, tomatoes and beans, there were many types of chillies that I’ve never seen before – with different names even their shapes. That day I spent almost $50 for full bags of chillies and some apples and pears. The fun of picking chillies made me forgot how small our fridge to keep them all in.
